Archie Andrews was nothing without Jughead Jones. He had realized that in elementary. When he first met Jughead Jones and Betty Cooper at the swing set. Waiting patiently for them to get off the swing, for Betty to give up on trying to beat Jughead's airtime. But they noticed him watching and without question invited him over. And he felt so accepted. It was that dependency on Jughead Jones that he had even when their group expanded. From meeting Veronica, the upper-class girl who turned out to be a loyal BFF. To befriending Betty's boyfriend Reggie until they broke up.
Archie avoided love, because not only was he dependent on one person, that one person was a boy. His dad always taught him that love was love, the most powerful thing humans can do. But he had been into girls before, and he wasn't just questioning his orientation. It was also the fact that he didn't know if he wanted to graduate on a sports scholarship anymore. He wanted to pursue music, but that indecisive trait needed to stop.
Archie also had zero time recently to figure himself out. The Sherrif had went missing a few months back, leaving Kevin Keller without any relatives to take him in. Fred Andrews, the ever community man, adopted Kevin without any question. And so Archie was busy redecorating the guest bedroom for Kevin, with zero time for himself.
So when he finally got free time, he set it aside to organize a group hangout. Him, Jughead, Reggie, Betty, Veronica and Kevin. In their treehouse. 15 x 15 ft, big and sturdy and warm and capable of holding a tv and a minifridge and a couch and up to 8 rowdy teens. He had managed to get his hands on some alcohol, and had promised himself he was going to get drunk, and wind down. Jughead was pretty apprehensive to the whole thing, it was almost annoying. He had been nagging about it being a bad idea. Which was weird because it was usually between Betty and Archie on who could be the biggest goody-two-shoes. But with everyone waiting for Reggie to arrive after he got extra practice and weight push-ups for coughing on the couch, they settled down and held their breath until they heard stupid heavy-footed Reggie make his way to the back corner of the Andrew's garage, up the sturdy winding steps and unlatch the door from the outside, a trick only the gang knew. He made a stupid whistle noise and some of the girls cheered. The cold-ish early spring still-too-cold-to-wear-short-sleeves air blew into the treehouse and Reggie immediately latched the door while the gang formed a circle on the floor. They fumbled with the bottle for 5-ish minutes until Jughead finally popped it open in his first try. A weirdly attractive skill to Archie. They decided to do a dare, truth, drink game. it was a stupid idea, likely to end with somebody hurt, and especially for a bunch of teens who didn't know how they would handle their drinks and how they acted. Archie poured the alcohol into cups, thanking his dad for building this sanctuary all those summers ago back in middle school. Before he handed everyone one cup and gave Jughead that stupid pouty eyed look he gave him, because he couldn't help it. If Jughead said turn around hop spin and bark, Archie would do it. So here he was, eye-pleading Jughead to join in on the fun. He nodded.
