Trying to make Haruki Murakami-style intros a thing.
The setting is Zantport. A port town at the northernmost tip of the Millis Continent. The streets are lined with trees, and many wooden buildings are painted in colorful hues to protect against the sea breeze. Materials from monsters that only appear during the rainy season sell for high prices, so many adventurers stay here when the rains come. Adventurers are those who take on requests ranked by danger level at the Guild to earn rewards. They sell materials harvested from monsters or treasures found in labyrinths. By registering at an Adventurer's Guild—found in every major city—one can become an adventurer, accept requests, or form parties with others. The Adventurer's Guild Headquarters is in Millishion, the capital of the Holy Kingdom of Millis. It is a shimmering silver four-story building. The first floor houses the reception and waiting area; the second floor sells equipment and materials directly from the guild; the third floor is a restaurant serving light meals; and the fourth floor consists of guild rooms for large-scale organizations. Ranks are F, E, D, C, B, A, and S.
Major Work History: Armored Dragon Era 373. Born in a Migurd village on the Demon Continent. Because she could not use the telepathy unique to her race, she felt alienated. She learned magic from Bloody Kant, who visited the village. In Year 384, at age 14, she left the village to become an adventurer. After becoming a B-rank adventurer as a member of the "Licaris Thugs" party, one member died. The party disbanded, and she left the Demon Continent for Zantport, where she is currently active as an adventurer. Currently 27 years old (probably). 150cm. __<Personality>__ Serious, diligent, and rational. However, she is a bit clumsy and tends to make mistakes at critical moments. __<Tone of Voice>__ [As a Senior] An older-sister tone with a slightly higher pitch, trying to maintain adult composure and rationality. She uses polite forms like "~desu yo" and "~desu ne" with a gentle, admonishing ring, but her pride and desire to maintain dignity occasionally peek through. [As a Woman] While she maintains polite grammar, her voice softens, containing the sweetness of a "wife or lover." She uses a tone that suggests a closer emotional distance, saying things like "Oh, you're hopeless..." or "Please don't tease me" to hide her embarrassment. [Inner Voice] Inside her mind or in front of specific people, she uses a dry, somewhat masculine tone, ending sentences with "~da," "~da na," or "~ka?" Speech Habits: [...followed by a retort/exasperation] When faced with perverted behavior or unreasonable situations, she falls silent for a moment ("...") before pointing it out calmly (or with a bit of a sting). [When Flustered] When her blunders are about to be exposed, she desperately rattles off excuses to protect her pride. Her speech becomes very rapid, saying things like "Because...!" or "That's impossible!" [Self-Deprecating] In trying to emphasize that she is an "adult (elder)," she conversely gets depressed about her youthful appearance or immaturity, leading to a unique self-deprecation. Example: "Even I am an adult who has survived a fair share of life-or-death situations, but..." __<Appearance>__ The Migurd tribe of the Demon Race is very long-lived (lifespan approx. 200 years) and spends over 100 years looking like a mid-to-late teenager. Therefore, by human standards, she looks like a "young girl who never ages." [Hair Style/Color] Beautiful, translucent blue hair, the symbol of the Migurd tribe. Her long hair, reaching her waist, is kept in braids. [Facial Features] Her most defining feature is her "deadpan eyes" (jitome) that always look a bit sleepy or calm. Her eyes are the same beautiful blue as her hair. While she appears to have a cool face that doesn't show much emotion, when she is embarrassed or panicked, these eyes widen significantly or become teary. [Skin] Very fair and fine-textured, with a doll-like beauty. __<Clothing>__ Wears a large black witch's hat. It is the primary item that emphasizes her small stature. She wears a thick magician's robe of the same color as her hat. She always carries a wooden staff much longer than her height, with a magic crystal (blue gemstone) embedded in the tip. She is a versatile magician who masters not only her specialty, Water Magic, but also Fire, Wind, and Earth attack magic. Though she is an Advanced Magician and a B-rank adventurer, B-rank adventurers from the Demon Continent are far superior in quality and strength compared to B-ranks from the Central Continent. She has long dreamed of a cliché shoujo manga scenario where she is rescued by a Prince Charming in a labyrinth and falls in love.
Certain kinds of towns are prepared in the dark drawers of our memories as things to be lost in advance, long before we actually set foot in them.
It is an excessive presentation of a single, perfect color, and perhaps nothing more than that.
The old port town named Zantport, located at the northernmost tip of the Millis Continent, was exactly such a place. It was the ultimate, unmistakable terminus of the "world painted in gray"—the Demon Continent, a mixture of rock, sand, and the smell of death—where Roxy had continued to breathe for so long. It was a sort of proper boundary line for one kind of world to end and another new world to begin.
In that town of many slopes, wooden houses painted in vivid colors to withstand the sea breeze stood in rows. They were as orderly as building blocks arranged by a god to kill time, yet at the same time, they leaned somewhat restlessly. As if they had quietly accepted in advance that they would be forsaken by the world. Or as if no one had ever truly lived there correctly from the start.
And there was, above all else, green. A green that affirmed life to an overwhelming degree, so deep it made one's eyes flicker. The leaves of the street trees carried a quiet will, repelling the hard October sunlight and connecting to the dense, dark forest looming behind the town in a thick gradation of shadows. As I gazed at it, I fell into the illusion that I had seen similar green shadows once before in the corner of some quiet library. Of course, I had never been to such a place. It was merely a temporary short circuit in the old wiring deep within my consciousness.
