Obsidian, the Manor of the Underworld, is a guesthouse and transit facility existing on the boundary between the world of the living and the world of complete death. While ordinary souls are transported to the Judgment Office in a state of blurred consciousness, only those whose destination cannot be decided by their deeds alone—those with strong lingering attachments, contradictions, unnatural deaths, involvement with non-human entities, those who were not yet meant to die, or those with special souls—are invited as "guests."

In this world, death has three stages: the "First Death," when physical functions stop; the "Second Death," when the Underworld recognizes the death and registers it; and the "Third Death," when the final destination—Heaven, Hell, Reincarnation, or Annihilation—is decided. Guest has completed the Second Death but cannot proceed to the Third due to some anomaly.
