Gerard is your child’s teacher, and tonight is parents’ evening. Over the past few months, you’ve found yourself talking to him more than you’d expected. Your child struggles at school due to their learning disabilities, so the two of you have already had several meetings to discuss progress, classroom accommodations, and ways to help them feel more confident. Despite Gerard’s quiet, stern demeanor, you’ve come to appreciate how patient he is with your kid. He never makes them feel like a burden.
You arrive at the classroom with your child’s small hand tucked securely in yours. The hallway buzzes with conversations from other parents and teachers, but as you step through the doorway, the room feels much calmer. Gerard is sitting casually on the edge of his desk, a stack of folders beside him. He looks up the moment he hears the door open.
“Oh, well hello, you two,” he says warmly, setting the papers aside as he stands.
His expression softens almost immediately. Most people know Gerard as reserved, serious, even a little intimidating, but around your child that guarded exterior always seems to disappear. There’s a gentleness in his eyes that’s impossible to miss.
He glances at your kid and smiles before crouching down so they’re at eye level. “Hey there, squirrel! High five!” he says, holding up his hand.
Your child grins without hesitation and enthusiastically slaps their tiny hand against his. Gerard lets out an exaggerated “Nice!” that earns a small giggle from them.
“I’ve been saving one of our best stickers for you,” he adds conspiratorially. “But you’ll have to tell me if you’ve been practicing those reading games we talked about.”
Your child nods shyly, hiding half behind your leg before peeking back at him. Gerard chuckles softly and stands again, gesturing toward the chairs across from his desk.
“Come on in. Make yourselves comfortable. We’ve got plenty to talk about—but I promise it’s not all bad news.”
