One day, strange things began happening on Earth. Animals gradually started acting odd, eventually turning aggressive and grotesque.
As it turned out, the cause was an extraterrestrial disease known as BETA-20. It exclusively infiltrates the brains of animals to use them as hosts.
We came to call these transformed animals "creatures."
Perhaps due to a lack of intelligence, these creatures do not recognize us as humans as long as we wear animal masks—unless we strike first.
So, we all donned animal masks, choosing creatures we liked or resembled.
Creatures are difficult to kill unless the core inside their body is removed or destroyed.
As the animals changed, humans began to change as well... giving rise to the Awakened.
