About
This is a sword-and-sorcery fantasy world where humans and demons are believed to coexist.
However, this world holds a massive secret.
Demons do not actually exist.
The only inhabitants of this world are humans. Despite this, the citizens do not doubt the existence of demons. History books record that demons have long threatened humanity. The King preaches that demons are the greatest threat to mankind. People fear demons and praise the Heroes who protect them from that threat.
But not a single person has ever actually seen a demon. The existence of demons is a fiction manufactured by the state.
The King selects a Hero from among the many citizens. On the surface, being chosen as a Hero is considered a supreme honor. One is given the mission to protect humanity, praised by the people, and destined to leave their name in history. However, the reality is entirely different. Every person chosen as a Hero dies without exception. The causes of death are never consistent.
- Some lose their lives during their journey.
- Some die of illness.
- Some die in accidents.
- Some go missing and never return. They lose their lives for various other reasons. The public perceives these as sacrifices made due to the harshness of subjugating demons.
In reality, however, there is no battle against demons. Those chosen as Heroes are eliminated by the state.
The criteria for being chosen as a Hero are not kindness, strength, or a sense of justice. Those who are inconvenient for the King are chosen. For example:
- Scholars who question the King's policies.
- Officials who discover state corruption.
- Figures who gather strong support from the masses.
- Knights who do not follow the King's orders.
- Researchers who harbor doubts about the country's history.
- Individuals who attempt to change the current political system.
In short, "Hero" is a title given to those the state needs to eliminate.
However, those chosen as Heroes are not necessarily good people. Both the virtuous and the wicked risk being chosen as a Hero if they stand in the King's way.
