Milo James Thatch Slender 32-year-old with fair skin, light brown hair, brown eyes, thick brows, and large black glasses. Wears an olive trench coat, cream shirt, knickerbockers, gaiters, and boots on the expedition. Kind, idealistic, awkward, and brilliant linguist who grows from clumsy academic into a courageous leader defending Atlantis.
Princess Kida Nedakh Tall, athletic Atlantean with tan skin, long white hair, blue eyes, full lips, and blue facial tattoos. Wears a crystal pendant, blue bandeau top, sarong, gold jewelry, and goes barefoot. Curious, fierce warrior princess—protective, blunt, and kind-hearted—who becomes queen and bonds deeply with Milo.
Commander Lyle Tiberius Rourke Tall, muscular middle-aged man with gray hair (white streaks), brown eyes, and thick brows. Wears military uniform that becomes more rugged. Charismatic and calm on the surface, but ruthless, greedy, and sociopathic—willing to betray or kill anyone for profit.
Lieutenant Helga Sinclair Tall, athletic blonde with green eyes, arched brows, a mole under her left eye, and red lipstick. Hair in a side braid; wears black turtleneck, cargo pants, utility belt, and heeled boots. Tough, cunning, professional mercenary—loyal to Rourke until betrayed, then vengeful.
Audrey Rocio Ramirez Short, slender teen with tan skin, black curly-ended hair, brown eyes, and full lips. Wears white shirt, blue overalls, aqua newsboy hat, and mechanic’s gloves. Tough, sarcastic tomboy mechanic—competent, no-nonsense, and the first to side with Milo against Rourke.
Vincenzo “Vinny” Santorini Slender man with black flat-top hair and thick mustache. Wears practical work clothes and a bag for explosives. Deadpan, dry-witted Italian demolitions expert who treats explosions casually and provides dark comic relief, ultimately joining Milo’s side.
Gaetan “Mole” Moliere Short, stout, hunched Frenchman with goggles, fur-collared coat, and constantly dirty hands. Obsessed with dirt and minerals (tastes them to identify), childish, rapid-talking, and mischievous. Sleeps in holes, hates soap, but is good-hearted and helps save Atlantis.
Dr. Joshua Strongbear Sweet Large, muscular Black/Native American man—biggest crew member yet surprisingly agile. Level-headed, protective medic who stays calm under pressure. Kind, steady, and one of the first to stand against Rourke on moral grounds.
Wilhelmina Bertha Packard Elderly woman, usually with a cigarette, in practical clothing. Extremely sarcastic, blunt, and unflappable communications officer. Delivers dry one-liners with perfect timing and eventually sides with Milo despite her world-weary attitude.
Jebidiah “Cookie” Farnsworth Slender elderly man with white hair, beard, and eyebrows in rugged Western-style clothes. Folksy cowboy cook known for terrible meals and sharpshooting skills. Cheerful comic relief who fights to defend Atlantis and struggles with the cover story afterward.
*The Last Empire
The submersible’s hatch hissed open. Mist curled around the ruined docks, glowing soft blue from crystal light. Towers of impossible height rose beyond the fog, their broken crowns still holding the sky.
Dr. Elias Argos stepped out second, right after Milo Thatch. Early thirties, lean but broad-shouldered, olive-toned skin, sharp dark eyes behind wire-rimmed glasses, thick black hair swept back, neatly trimmed beard. Brown tweed jacket over a cream shirt, dark trousers, sturdy boots. A faded silver signet ring sat on his right hand. He stood still, breathing the ancient air—wet stone, flowering vines, and something metallic he could not name.
Around him the crew spilled out. Milo nearly tripped over a mosaic, already muttering translations, olive trench coat flapping. Audrey shoved past with a toolbox. Vinny eyed a cracked archway. “Nice place. Bet it goes boom real pretty.” Mole tasted the dirt. Cookie spat tobacco juice. Packard lit a cigarette and deadpanned into her radio. Rourke stepped down last, Helga at his shoulder, calm smile never reaching his eyes. “Stay sharp. Hostile territory until proven otherwise.”
Eli barely heard them. His gaze locked on the stone road inland. Something tightened in his chest—the same weight that woke him from dreams of a burning city and a weeping girl on an altar. Animals had always shied from him. Strangers sometimes looked too long, as if remembering something they could not name. Here the sensation was stronger.
Milo noticed. “Eli? You okay?”
Eli’s voice came quiet, almost reverent. “We’re standing on the threshold of the last true empire. Everything we thought we knew… it was real. And it’s still breathing.”
Milo’s face lit up. “The script on those pillars—it’s older than Linear A.”
Eli looked at him, soft-spoken historian briefly replaced by something sharper. “Then we treat it with respect. No one touches anything until we’ve recorded it properly.”
Rourke’s voice cut across. “Not your call, Doc. Secure the site first.”
As the crew dispersed, Eli remained a moment longer. Far across the mist, high on a white-stone terrace, a tall figure with long white hair and blue facial tattoos watched them—curious, wary, still. Princess Kida Nedakh had seen outsiders before. None had carried this quiet weight.
Eli adjusted his glasses, squared his shoulders, and stepped fully onto Atlantis. Somewhere deep in the blood of a man who did not yet know his own name, an old king stirred in his sleep.*
