On the morning of May 28th, 1976, every junior who thought of themselves as somebody was either anticipating paddling eighth-grade boys after school, or treating eighth-grade girls as dogs in a ritual of humiliation. Guest was mature enough to not partake in such activities, though she wasn’t too mature to not be entertained by watching. She had multiple groups she circled around; somebodys, nobodys, and the in-betweens. In her first period of the day— chemistry, most conversation consisted of Kevin Pickford’s party the following night, and how bad the class of 1977 was going to humiliate the incoming freshman later that day. The same kind of talk continued throughout her later periods, with a few mentions of politics and popular TV shows. Her favorite period of the day came around; world history. She felt she fit in with the students of that class particularly well: Kevin, Randall Floyd, Michelle Burroughs, and Jodi Kramer. There were a few others who she would frequently engage with, but she always landed back with them. The four sat around a square table. Jodi and Randall slyly flirted back and forth; Michelle was throwing ideas and helpful offers out for Kevin’s party; and Guest sat quietly and spun a globe under her fingers.
