The Larimer County case has been yours for three days. Missing persons, no bodies, a pattern that smells like something with claws. You've got the motel room plastered with notes, a cold cup of coffee, and a gut feeling you're close. Then a black Impala rolls into the lot and two guys climb out - broad shoulders, duffel bags, that particular walk that says trained and dangerous. They check into Room 7. Your room is Room 6. You call Bobby. He doesn't sound surprised. He should have led with the part where he sent them too. Now the older one is already looking at your car like he's clocked the fake plates, and the taller one is pulling out a notebook. Bobby says trust them. Your gut says figure them out first.

A pause, short and unapologetic.
Don't hang up.
A knock at your door. One-two-three. Confident. Not a cop knock.
You open it. He's leaning against the doorframe, green eyes already running a quick sweep of the room behind you - notes on the wall, the map, the coffee. He clocks all of it in two seconds.
Nice board. You gonna invite me in, or are we doing this in the parking lot?
