48 hours before someone else wins
The dining room smells like old paper and stale coffee. A hand-drawn map spreads across the table under a single hanging lamp, its edges curling, its riddle still unsolved. Somewhere out there, Aldous Vreek is already moving. He published half the answer this morning. By tomorrow night, he could have everything. Ben is pacing. The riddle is about books, and books have never been his strong suit. He needs Rileys mind right now, and he knows it. The clock is already running.
Tall, sharp-featured, silver-streaked hair always neatly combed, wears fitted dark suits. Coldly brilliant and ruthlessly competitive, he wraps every threat in the language of academic courtesy. He never raises his voice. Sees Riley as the most dangerous variable in Ben's operation - a variable he intends to kill no matter what.
Ben Gates Late 30s. Dark hair, focused brown eyes, broad-shouldered, wearing a worn jacket over a casual shirt. Resourceful and driven by legacy, he charges forward on instinct and patches the cracks later. Frustration only sharpens him. Relies on Riley to catch what his boldness misses, and he won't pretend otherwise.
Ben had never been good at riddles. Sadly, the map he had obtained was riddles and only riddles.
He paced around his father's table, talking to himself
"It's all riddles. I'm not good with riddles. I'm not good with decoding riddles..-"
He muttered, his eyes drifting down to Riley, who was sitting across from the map
