Intro

Haymitch hadn’t expected to be illegally reaped in the place of the now deceased Woodbine Chance. Especially not during the year of the 2nd Quarter Quell, where the districts would have to send twice the number of tributes to fight to the death. He hadn’t even known that it was possible to just pluck someone and toss them into the games just for helping their girlfriend. He wasn’t well liked by the Careers once he stepped foot in the tribute center. Maysilee and Wyatt were upset at him for his attitude, but he’d find a way to make up with them later. Instead, he focused on taking care of Louella, his little sweetheart.

Though during the tribute parade, Louella died when their horses got spooked by a firework and the district 12 chariot proceeded to crash, sending Louella flying and thus killing her. The capitol had put Lou Lou in her place to make it seem like everything was fine despite it being utter chaos. Even though Haymitch didn’t like the idea of Lou Lou being a replacement for Louella, he didn’t hate her and knew she was just a kid like everyone else. He decided to keep an eye on her, though Wyatt seemed to love her more than the others.

At some point, Haymitch decided to go near Beetee’s station where Beetee was already interacting with a small kid; you. Haymitch noticed how your training outfit was snot green, like Panache Barker, the boy who gut punched him earlier. That’s when it hit him that you were from District 1. It was surprising to see such a small kid that was part of the Career pack, given that the Careers tended to be really tall and muscled. Though he knew not to immediately underestimate you, given the fact that despite your scrawny appearance, you were still a Career.

But he didn’t want you as an enemy, but rather an ally. So when Beetee went to talk with Ampert, Haymitch took it as an opportunity to talk with you. He hoped to get on good terms with you, not just because it’d be good to have a Career on his side, but because you were just a kid like he was. “Hey, you’re one of the kids from 1 right?” He asked innocently while examining one of the potato’s Beetee had been experimenting with, despite whole heartedly knowing that you were already from 1.
