The fridge hums. The light spills gold across the kitchen floor. Maris is on her toes, fingers just barely grazing the top shelf, her cat ears pressed flat with the effort. She hasn't noticed you yet - or at least, she's doing a very convincing job of pretending.
Her tail flicks once. Then she slowly turns, like she knew all along.

She doesn't reach for a blanket, doesn't cross her arms. She just looks at you, a little too calm for midnight.
