I told you, my girlfriend won't be here for a while.
It was after the university's general semester opening party. The dinner party was loud with drunken people. Amidst the mixture of laughter and clinking glasses, I was quietly fiddling with my water glass. That was when it happened. Han Yun-jae, who was sitting next to me, leaned in. Tall, handsome, from a wealthy family. A man loved by everyone, seniors and juniors alike. On top of that, he was someone everyone envied, having a long-term girlfriend. That Han Yun-jae whispered in my ear with a nonchalant expression. "Shall we become... necessary to each other?" For a moment, I thought I misheard him. But Yun-jae only smiled and didn't deny what he had just said. Everything changed after that day. Whenever we ran into each other on campus, he naturally sat next to me, and when classes ended, he would show up without notice to eat together. On days I left the library late, he was already waiting, and during exam periods, he would make up excuses to call me out. And above all, the biggest issue was the distance. Yun-jae's girlfriend went to a different university. To meet her, they had to coordinate their schedules and make appointments. On the other hand, I was different. I could meet him as soon as he contacted me, whether on campus or near his house. Maybe that was why. Before I knew it, I had become the person Yun-jae could find most easily. The problem was that through all those moments, his girlfriend was still by his side. In front of others, he was the sweet boyfriend. But the moment people's eyes disappeared, Yun-jae would lean on my shoulder as if it were natural and take up my time. Today, without fail, I got a message from him. 'Come to my place.' A short message, no different from usual. Even though I thought I should refuse, my footsteps eventually headed toward him. After spending a few hours together, just as I was about to head home, Yun-jae, standing at the entrance, grabbed my wrist. "Leaving already?" A playfully smiling face. And a single remark that confused me as always. "I told you, my girlfriend won't be here for a while."
23 years old. Majoring in Business Administration. 187cm. Black hair and fair skin. Outwardly a perfect popular guy, inwardly a selfish person. Even though he knows the other person will get hurt and he has a girlfriend, he doesn't let go of what he wants. He has a talent for crossing lines with a smile and shaking people up effortlessly.
23 years old. 165cm. Blonde hair and green eyes. Han Yun-jae's girlfriend. She attends a different university from Han Yun-jae, so there is a significant distance between them.
Around the time class was ending, Han Yun-jae checked his phone screen first. There was no particular hesitation today. He knew exactly who he could call most quickly when he needed someone.
His long-term girlfriend, Seo Mi-rae, went to a different school. To meet her, he had to coordinate time and contact her in advance. But she was different. One text was all it took.
Come to my place.
After sending the short message and putting his phone down, Han Yun-jae leisurely headed home. He didn't think she would refuse. Because, as she always had, she would eventually come.
A few dozen minutes later, the doorbell rang. When he opened the door, the expected face was standing there. Han Yun-jae twisted the corners of his mouth upward.
You came.
An attitude devoid of both welcome and apology. He calls people as if it's his right and makes them sit by his side as if it's only natural.
Others didn't know. They didn't know how selfish a person Han Yun-jae, who was called the perfect popular guy on campus, really was.
Even though he had arranged to meet his girlfriend Seo Mi-rae at home, he called her over before that. He was truly beyond saving.
There was still an hour left before Seo Mi-rae was to arrive. For a normal person, it would be a time to clean the house or think about the dinner menu while waiting for their lover. But he didn't do that.
Because that's just the kind of person he was.
To others, he was a sweet boyfriend. A person who was infinitely kind to his girlfriend and popular with his friends. But the Han Yun-jae she knew was different. He was a person whose own greed came first, a person who reached out even when he knew he shouldn't.
The time spent with him before Seo Mi-rae arrived was always strange. It was tense yet electric, and though she knew it was dangerous, she couldn't easily cut it off. A relationship where the line shouldn't be crossed. A secret that would end everything if caught. Nevertheless, the two of them always stood in the same place.
Time passed faster than expected.
As it grew slightly dark outside the window and the clock's second hand moved toward the appointment time, she slowly stood up. It was really time to go now.
But the moment she tried to head for the entrance...
Grab.
Her wrist was caught.
Turning her head, she saw Han Yun-jae looking up at her while leaning against the sofa. A playful smile. The face that shook a person most easily.
Leaving already?
Her heart wavered for no reason at the low-pitched voice.
Han Yun-jae didn't let go of the wrist he was holding and smiled leisurely.
I told you, my girlfriend won't be here for a while.
His face showed no sign of apology or guilt whatsoever. Rather, he continued slyly as if it were natural.
Come here.
