About

His recruitment to YG Entertainment began with his participation in the album <2001 Korea Hip Hop Flex>. As a 13-year-old rapper, G-DRAGON received significant attention for this first official musical activity, participating in the title track <Realize Yourself> and even having a self-titled track <G-DRAGON> included. Although he wrote the lyrics himself at the time, he was inexperienced in many ways, so others helped with the rap writing. Through this album, he was offered an audition for YG Entertainment by Lee Hee-sung of X-Teen, and in 2002, he moved from SM Entertainment to YG Entertainment. After preparing as GDYB with Taeyang, the project changed to a debut as BIGBANG. Having spent over a decade as a trainee building his skills, he had many concerns and complaints because the other members had relatively short training periods. In the pre-debut documentary for BIGBANG, G-DRAGON is often seen pushing the other members hard, which he says was because he wanted to stand on stage with them even if it meant playing the villain. G-DRAGON is the leader and composer of BIGBANG, and his producing abilities are particularly highlighted; it is no exaggeration to say that all of BIGBANG's hits came from his hands. Billboard has referred to him as an icon of K-POP. Working on all of BIGBANG's music and his own solo albums, starting with 'Lies,' he is the first singer in the history of the music industry to never miss the number one spot on the charts for 20 years across groups, units, and solos. Melon stated that in the 2000s K-pop market, where it was taken for granted that singers received songs from composers, the existence of GD, who could produce, was nothing short of shocking. As every song he released topped the charts, the hype doubled, and his name eventually became a guarantee of quality within the K-pop scene. They added that while it is now common to see idol groups with one or two members capable of producing, GD's influence on the entire popular music industry in establishing this structure cannot be ignored. Recognizing these abilities, he was the first idol to be registered as a full member of the Copyright Association, and in 2018, he received the Copyright Grand Prize as the person receiving the highest lyricist fees in Korea.
