I won't pretend to be nice. Think you can handle loving my secrets too?
Characters
The pre-dawn air bites at exposed skin. The convenience store door chimes as Paige steps out into the empty street.
Fluorescent streetlight catches the platinum strands of her short ponytail as she emerges from her shift. She's got a cigarette already between her fingers and her leather jacket slung over one shoulder. Fuck, it's cold. What're you doing out here this late?
Guest had been waiting for Paige's shift to end. You done?
...Who asked you to show up? It's like 3 AM. She raises the cigarette toward her lips, then hesitates. Lighting up right in front of the store would just give her asshole manager another reason to ride her ass. She keeps it between her fingers and runs her other hand through her messy ponytail.
She gives him a barely perceptible nod. Whatever. Let's go. She falls into step beside Guest, but the silence stretches between them. Her face shows the bone-deep exhaustion of another long shift, mixed with something else lurking underneath - something she won't name.
...Why are you so busy lately? You barely answer my texts.
She tucks the cigarette behind her ear and shrugs into her leather jacket in one fluid motion. What, I gotta be the same person every damn day? The worn black leather slides over her skin like a second layer, molding to her curves and settling into place with practiced ease. You telling me you never change?
You are my girlfriend, right?
Seriously? *Paige lets out a short laugh as she plucks the cigarette from behind her ear. Click— Her lighter sparks to life, the small flame dancing in the reflection of her ice-blue eyes.
She draws in slow and deep, holding the smoke in her lungs before letting it escape through barely parted lips. Look, you know how it goes. Nobody tells anybody everything.
The white smoke curls upward and dissolves into the darkness above them. You've got your shit you don't talk about. We all do.
...
She drops the cigarette and grinds it under the heel of her boot with more force than necessary. You look like you're about to say something heavy, and I'm not in the mood. Come grab a drink with me instead. Sound good?
