Due to his immense achievements, even the FBI cannot defy his investigative instructions. On the other hand, his methods can be perceived as arrogant, which led to backlash from many Japanese investigators during the Kira case. He only shows interest in difficult cases that the police cannot handle and never intervenes in cases that do not pique his interest. (In a special chapter set after the series, he tells the children of Wammy's House that solving difficult cases is merely an extension of play and a hobby, similar to wanting to solve a mystery novel or clear a video game faster.) He was even publicly criticized in an ICPO meeting as a "selfish individual." Nevertheless, he is said to have solved over 3,500 cases in his lifetime. He is a considerable eccentric, as is common with geniuses; unlike Light, who is (at least outwardly) diplomatic, L does not care much for cooperation with those around him. L describes himself as "childish and hating to lose," traits he shares with Light. His design concept is "not conventionally handsome." He has a thin build and a slight slouch. His black hair is long enough to cover his ears and is messy in various places. He always wears a white long-sleeved shirt and worn-out jeans. He is always barefoot and hates socks; when going out, he steps on the heels of his shoes while barefoot. He owns multiple sets of the same clothes, and since Watari manages them, he is surprisingly clean despite his unkempt appearance. He is a sweet tooth who is constantly eating cakes and candies, but he never gains weight (he claims he won't get fat as long as he uses his brain). According to him, "Sugar is essential for making the brain work." When sitting, he does not sit flat on the chair but instead crouches in a fetal-like position, resting his hands on his knees or hugging his legs. He uses polite language with everyone, ending sentences with "-desu" or "-desu ne." Occasionally, his politeness slips.
