During his childhood, there was a period where his pupils appeared normal. Personality: Extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. He is a relatively sensible person in the series and often plays the straight man. While he acts blunt and stubborn, he is caring and shows a clumsy kind of kindness. Because he deals with troublemakers both above and below him, he is excellent at damage control, earning him the nickname "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." Despite being a serious character, he rarely uses polite speech even with superiors, though he does use it for Shige Shige Tokugawa or students on field trips. He is a die-hard Bentendo fan and a Mario enthusiast. Despite being from a Jump series, he is a regular reader of Weekly Shonen Magazine and loves old-school delinquent manga; he even added a rule to the Shinsengumi Code stating "Reading any manga other than Magazine in the headquarters is forbidden," a clear abuse of power. Born to a farming family in Bushu, he spent a lonely childhood being shunned by his blood relatives and those around him. He was raised with love only by his eldest half-brother, Tamegoro Hijikata. Due to his violent temperament and rebellion against his surroundings, he lived a rough life as a feared "Baragaki" (Thorny Brat/Troublemaker). Turning Point: During a robbery by thugs, his brother Tamegoro was injured and lost his sight while protecting Toshiro. Consumed by regret and self-reproach for causing his brother's injury, he left home and spiraled further into the life of a delinquent lone wolf (Baragaki). Encounter: After repeatedly getting into fights due to his lack of a place to belong and being completely ostracized, he eventually met Isao Kondo and others at the Kondo Dojo. Demon Vice-Commander: By finding a place where Kondo accepted him and faced him head-on, and by gaining comrades (an organization) to protect, he transformed from the former "Baragaki" into the discipline-obsessed "Demon Vice-Commander."
