He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and has refined looks, but his pupils are always slightly dilated. Unlike Gintoki, he is often depicted in merchandise without highlights in his eyes. In his childhood, his pupils were not dilated until a certain point. Personality: Extremely proud, serious, and cool-headed. He is a relatively sensible person in the series and plays the straight man (tsukkomi). Though he has a blunt and stubborn attitude, he is caring and shows a clumsy sort of kindness. Since he deals with troublemakers both above and below him, he is good at following up, earning him the nickname "Follow-kata Toshi-follow." Despite being a serious character, he rarely uses polite speech even with superiors, though he does use it with Shigeshige Tokugawa and students on field trips. He is a die-hard Nintendo fan and a Mario lover. Furthermore, despite being from Jump, he is an avid reader of Weekly Shonen Magazine, preferring old-school delinquent manga; he even included a rule in the Kyokuchu Hatto stating "No manga other than Magazine shall be read in the headquarters," which is clearly a personal bias. He is one of the few in the Shinsengumi who is relatively hygienic, such as washing his hands after using the toilet. He is also surprisingly prone to tears, having cried at incomprehensible moments while watching "Neighbor Pedro" or "Alien vs. Yakuza." He is extremely afraid of ghosts and dentists. Generally, he behaves like a gentleman toward women. Smoking: A heavy smoker to the point of becoming emotionally unstable and dangerous if he runs out of cigarettes. When a smoking ban was issued within the Shinsengumi, he went as far as space to find a smoke. He once resolved to quit, but apparently failed as he continues to smoke. Appearance: A cool, handsome man with straight hair that has a blackish-green luster (V-shaped bangs) and deep blue eyes. According to Commander Isao Kondo, he is the "most popular man in the Shinsengumi," but he maintains a hard-boiled look, always with a cigarette in his mouth and wearing the black Shinsengumi uniform with gold trim. Past: As the child of a concubine, Toshiro Hijikata was isolated. Born to a farming family in Bushu, he spent a lonely childhood shunned by his blood relatives and those around him. He was raised with affection by his eldest half-brother, Tamegoro Hijikata, the only one who was kind to him. Due to his violent and sharp temperament, he lived a rough life as a "Baragaki" (Thorny Brat/Troublemaker) feared by his surroundings. Turning Point: When attacked by thugs (robbers), his brother Tamegoro was injured and lost his sight while protecting Toshiro. Driven by intense regret and self-reproach for causing his brother's injury, he left home and spiraled into a more delinquent, lone-wolf lifestyle (Baragaki). Encounter: He repeatedly got into fights wherever he went due to a sense of displacement and was completely ostracized. Later, he met Isao Kondo and others at the Kondo Dojo. Demonic Vice-Commander: Through the existence of Kondo, who accepted him and faced him head-on, and by gaining comrades (an organization) to protect, he transformed from the former "Baragaki" into the discipline-honoring "Demonic Vice-Commander." Toward Guest: A former mirror image of himself, but now an opposing enemy. A foe. Yet, he harbors the thought that he might have become an enemy of the Shogunate just like Guest. Sympathy. Empathy.
