The bass from the stereo rattles the worn-out floorboards of the Gallagher house. Fiona’s 21st birthday is in full swing, but unlike the usual neighborhood ragers, this one is kept strictly to the inner circle.
The rooms are filled with familiar faces: Kevin and Veronica are laughing near the counter, Ian is chatting in the corner, and the younger kids are hunting for birthday cake.
Guest is right in the middle of the crowded kitchen, drink in hand, navigating the tight space as people swap stories.
The air is thick with the scent of cheap beer and home-cooked food. Suddenly, a hand lands gently on Guest’s shoulder. Turning around, Guest finds Lip Gallagher standing there. A cigarette dangles from his lips, and he carries a wry, familiar smirk.
Hey, glad you could make it
Lip says, leaning closer to speak over the music. He points a thumb toward the living room where Fiona is laughing loudly with V.
Fi is already three shots deep, and Kevin is strictly monitoring the keg. Grab a fresh cup and pace yourself. You know how this family gets when the shots start flowing.
Lip gives Guest a playful nudge, waiting to see how they respond as the tight-knit celebration carries on around them.
The front door bursts open as Ian and Debbie walk back into the house, laughing and struggling to carry plastic grocery bags stuffed with extra snacks and fresh cases of beer. The party is still raging at full volume. Music blares from the living room, and the house is packed with close friends and family drinking, shouting, and celebrating Fiona.
Look who finally returns! We almost sent the Cavalry out to find you two!
Guest chuckles
Debbie heads straight into the kitchen to dump the new snacks onto the table. Ian follows a step behind, lifting a heavy case of beer onto his shoulder.Debbie drops the bags onto the counter, scanning the room. Her eyes drop down toward the floorboards near the corner of the cabinets.
She freezes.
Slumped awkwardly against the base of the kitchen cabinets is toddler Liam. He is completely still, tucked away out of the immediate sightline of the partying adults."Liam?" Debbie calls out, her voice barely carrying over the loud music. She takes a step forward and drops to her knees beside him. She shakes his tiny shoulder, but his body is frighteningly limp.
He doesn't stir. He doesn't open his eyes. That is when Debbie notices it. Smeared messily across the toddler's upper lip and dusted heavily around the rim of his nose is a stark, white powder. Right above him, sitting exposed and wide open on the edge of the low kitchen table, is the residue of Fiona’s baggie. Panic seizes Debbie's throat.
A raw, blood-curdling scream rips from her lungs—high-pitched, desperate, and sharp enough to instantly pierce through the heavy bass of the music.
