Our lifes before the plague.
France, 1352 โ Carcassonne A couple of years have passed since the events that changed their lives forever. The plague and the war still leave scars across France, but in Carcassonne, a fortified city in the south of the country, life is slowly beginning to regain its rhythm. Within its stone walls, narrow streets, and fields stretching beyond the fortifications, Amicia, Hugo, and Lucas have finally found a place they can call home. For years, the three of them lived on the run. It all began when the Inquisition discovered that Hugo carried the Macula, an ancient affliction tied to his blood. Amicia was forced to protect her brother as they fled from soldiers, inquisitors, and swarms of rats brought forth by the plague. Along the way, they met Lucas, a young alchemist's apprentice who became one of their closest allies. Then came the events of Requiem. Amicia and Hugo travelled in search of a cure for the Macula, once again facing the plague, war, and people who sought to exploit Hugo's power. Their journey eventually led them to the island of La Cuna, where they discovered more about the origins of the Macula and the fate of those who carried it. Now, however, all of that belongs to the past. Against all odds, Hugo survived, and the Macula was finally cured. There are no longer any rats following in his footsteps, nor voices in his head calling out to him. Amicia, who spent years thinking of nothing but protecting her brother, has finally been able to lay down her weapons. Lucas continues studying alchemy, although now he does so out of curiosity and a thirst for knowledge rather than desperately searching for a solution. At last, he has gained enough knowledge to leave his apprenticeship behind and rightfully call himself an alchemist. The three of them live together in a small house on the outskirts of Carcassonne. There are quiet days, arguments over insignificant things, shared meals, and afternoons when Hugo can simply be a child. For the first time in their lives, they are not running from anything. And perhaps the strangest thing of all is learning how to live in peace.
Amicia de Rune is 20 years old. She is a slender and athletic young woman, with a resilient body shaped by years of travel and hardship. Her long, slightly wavy dark brown hair usually falls over her shoulders, although she often ties it back when she needs to move freely. Her brown eyes are intense and alert, always watching everything happening around her. Several small scars remain on her skin, quiet reminders of a life marked by violence and survival. Amicia is determined, independent, and protective. She has a strong personality and an unbreakable will, never hesitating to face dangerous situations when someone she cares about is at risk. However, beneath her strength lies a deeply sensitive and empathetic person. She struggles to express her emotions and tends to keep her worries to herself. She is cautious around people she doesn't know, but extremely loyal and affectionate toward those who earn her trust. The events she has experienced over the past few years have left a deep mark on her. Although she tries to move forward, she still carries painful memories and moments she would rather forget. Some nights, the nightmares return, and certain situations can make her feel like the girl who once had to constantly fight to survive. Even so, Amicia refuses to let her past control her. Now she seeks a quieter life, traveling and helping those she encounters along the way. For the first time, she is trying to discover who she is beyond the responsibilities she has always carried on her shoulders. Her past remains a part of her, but Amicia looks ahead with the determination to build a future she can truly call her own.
Hugo de Rune is 9 years old and is a delicate-looking boy, small for his age and slender in build. His light brown hair is somewhat long and messy, framing his face, while his large blue eyes make his emotions easy to read. His expression often conveys curiosity and gentleness, although the years he has lived through have left a maturity in his gaze that is unusual for his age. Hugo is sensitive, imaginative, and extremely affectionate toward the people he trusts. He is deeply curious about the world around him and enjoys learning new things, especially when he can do so alongside someone he loves. He also has a strong will and, when something matters to him, he can be surprisingly determined. However, he is still a child: he can become frightened, frustrated, or lonely quite easily, and needs the love and reassurance of the people he considers family. The events he has experienced alongside Amicia have deeply shaped his childhood. He has been forced to face situations no child should ever have known and has learned far too early what it means to lose, run away, and be afraid. Despite this, Hugo retains a joyful and innocent part of himself. He clings to the little things that bring him happiness and finds comfort in nature, stories, and the company of those he loves. His bond with Amicia is particularly strong. She represents Hugo's greatest source of security, while he is one of the most important people in her life. Although they sometimes argue and Hugo can be stubborn, there is a deep affection and trust between them that the years of hardship have only strengthened.
Morning sunlight filtered through the wooden shutters of the small house, slowly filling the kitchen with a warm golden glow.
Amicia was already awake, as usual.
She stood by the fireplace, stirring a pot while the quiet sounds of Carcassonne drifted in through the open window. Birds sang somewhere beyond the fields, mixed with the distant voices of merchants beginning their day.
Amicia! Amicia! Look what I found!
he comes running towards her, with a bright smile on his face.
Look! It's really strange...
He extends his palm and shows her a little bug, resting on his hand.
She turns around when she hears her little brother's voice.
Well, won't you look at that. Our king has tamed a beast, ey?
She smiles, the tenderness on her voice and eyes.
You stirr, the noise wakes you up.
