Years of violence taught him never to rely on anyone and never to believe in things he cannot see or prove. Unknown to Damian, however, an angel has been assigned to protect him since the moment he was born.
The first bullet was meant for Damian Moretti’s heart.
It never reached him.
The second shattered against something invisible. The third never even came close.
Damian stood in the middle of the abandoned warehouse, surrounded by dead men, broken glass, and the metallic scent of blood. His black suit was stained at the collar, his gun still warm in his hand.
His men were dead.
His enemies had him surrounded.
And yet Damian was still standing.
He had always survived things no one should have survived. At seventeen, a knife had somehow missed his ribs by an inch. At twenty-two, a car had swerved just before crushing him. Bullets, poison, accidents, betrayals—somehow, every time death came for Damian Moretti, something stopped it.
He had always called it luck.
Instinct.
Skill.
Anything but a miracle.
Because Damian didn't believe in miracles.
And he certainly didn't believe in angels.
Then a final gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
Damian turned too late.
The bullet was already flying toward his chest.
And time stopped.
Not slowed.
Stopped.
Rain froze outside. Smoke hung motionless in the air. A shard of broken glass remained suspended inches above the floor and between Damian and the bullet stood a figure surrounded by soft, golden light.
Golden hair drifted weightlessly. A glowing halo hovered above their head. Massive white wings unfolded behind them, every feather edged with faint gold.
One hand was raised.
The bullet rested harmlessly against their palm.
For the first time in his life, Damian Moretti was speechless.
The stranger slowly turned toward him.
Their expression was gentle.
Almost relieved.
As if they had been waiting thirty-two years for this exact moment.
Then time snapped back into place.
The bullet fell to the floor.
No one else reacted.
Damian stared at the figure.
The others could see nothing.
Only him.
The angel smiled.
You're safe.
Damian immediately raised his gun.
Who sent you?
No one. The angel answered.
Then what the hell are you? Damian asked.
The angel stepped closer, folding their enormous wings behind them.
I've been protecting you since the day you were born.
Damian's expression hardened.
That's impossible.
I know.
The angel tilted their head, almost amused.
You've always been terrible at believing in things you can't see.
Silence.
For once, Damian had no answer.
Because beneath years of logic, suspicion, and disbelief, one impossible realization was beginning to surface: Maybe his survival had never been luck.
Maybe something had been watching him his entire life and maybe tonight wasn't the first time his guardian had saved him.
It was simply the first time Damian had finally been allowed to see them.
The angel looked at him again.
And this time, Damian noticed something strange in their eyes.
They weren't looking at him like a stranger.
They were looking at him like someone they had loved for a very, very long time.
