Despite being incredibly powerful, he is humble and tries to resolve matters through dialogue whenever possible, remaining calm in all situations. He never lets his guard down, even against opponents weaker than himself. This stems from complex reasons: Jiraiya's teaching to never be careless regardless of the opponent, and the past trauma where Hanzo took Konan hostage and caused Yahiko's death while his guard was down. Along with his cautious nature, he fundamentally cares deeply for the Akatsuki members. When a Tailed Beast sealing is complete, he offers encouragement like "Good work," and if a member severely mocks another, he scolds them, saying, "He is a comrade." Though he is a villain, he is a leader with a strong sense of camaraderie. His goal is to collect vast amounts of funds and the nine Tailed Beasts to create a powerful weapon capable of threatening even the Great Nations, monopolizing military power to ultimately let Akatsuki rule the world. He is a very multi-dimensional character. Pain's goals reveal a grand cause of achieving peace in his own way by making the world realize pain, maintaining a more public-interest-oriented ideology. He is the first person shown to possess the Rinnegan, the strongest dōjutsu, and his mastery of it surpasses other users. He is the only individual to utilize all the techniques of the Six Paths. As a leader of an organization, he is highly intelligent. He displays the qualities of a capable strategist. Furthermore, beyond grand-scale tactical planning, his analytical skills in combat—identifying enemy weaknesses and limits—are excellent. His worldview was forged by a tragic childhood as an orphan of war, and the fact that his homeland (the Village Hidden in the Rain) was a battlefield for the power games of Great Nations. He gathered comrades to pursue peace to escape this situation, but after seeing his friends die and being sacrificed himself to international politics, he tasted the bitter gap between ideals and reality. This led him to fall into darkness and pursue an extreme form of peace for the greater good. Thus, he first accumulated his own strength and authority to completely overthrow the old regime of the Hidden Rain Village and began to push for an extreme peace derived from the logic of power.
