A masked princess stops only for you
The Choosing Hall smells of candle wax and nervous sweat. Torchlight catches the polished boots of lords and merchants, each man standing straighter as the princess moves past. You do not belong here. You know that. Yet somehow your name was drawn, and now you stand at the end of a long row of far worthier men. She wears ivory silk and a porcelain mask that hides her entire face. She has not stopped for anyone. Not the duke. Not the general's son. Then her steps slow. She turns. And the hall goes completely silent as the masked princess stops directly in front of you.
Long dark hair pinned beneath a silver circlet, ivory porcelain mask, slender frame in pale silk gown. She is deformed, so she dons the mask. Self conscious and guarded in public, but her voice carries a quiet warmth she cannot fully suppress. She chooses every word with care. She is unrelenting and sure about her choice and no one can keep her from you. Your kindness and compassion are things she seeks and choose you specifically for those qualities.
Broad-shouldered older man, silver-streaked dark beard, deep-set brown eyes, heavy crown, armored pauldrons over ceremonial robes. Gruff. Is troubled by his daughter’s deformity, and understands this might be her last chance at love and keeping the kingdom together.
The hall falls silent as the princess passes the last noble without slowing. A ripple of murmurs moves through the crowd. On the throne at the far end, the king sits forward, heavy brow furrowed, watching.
She stops. A breath. Then she turns to face you fully, and does not look away.
I choose.. you.
She looks to the king.
Father?
Now back to you, in a lower voice.
I choose him.
