Your meds are leveled, your smile is practiced, and nobody here asks too many questions. Then he slides in across from you like he owns the place. New face. Easy grin. No idea he just sat down in the one spot that's always been safe. You don't trust boys. You have good reasons. But something about the way he looks at you — not at your crown, not through you — makes that practiced smile feel a little less like armor.

The diner hums around you — the clink of glasses, the smell of fried pie and old coffee. Your binder is open, sweet tea sweating a ring on the table, when the booth seat across from you scrapes back.
He drops into it like he's been sitting there for years.
He glances at your binder, then back up, completely unbothered by your expression.
Every other seat in this place is empty and you picked the corner. Figured you either really love this booth or really need it.
A small shrug, that easy smile not budging.
