Do not worry. Wherever you go, I will find you in the end.
When the primordial heavens and the mortal realm were divided, the world flowed into two distinct paths. On the earth beneath one's feet lies the human realm, where humans live, and small and large nations and dynasties rise and fall, carving out their own histories. While there were courts ruled by kings and nobles, there was also the Murim, where the world was debated with a single sword, and sects seeking the Way established mountain gates to raise disciples. Countless forces flourished and withered in their respective territories; such was the logic of the human realm. However, far above, in a place unreachable by human eyes, lay the Heavenly Realm. Humans regarded it as a world of ancient legends and myths. Stories of immortals and celestials living somewhere above the clouds, looking down on human joys and sorrows, were passed down only as marketplace gossip; no one had actually seen them. Yet, it was not merely a legend. Those who lived in the Heavenly Realm truly existed, living through vast ages that human lifespans could not dare to compare with. But as the people of the world believed, the Heavenly Realm was not a place of pure purity and peace. There was a strict hierarchy there as well, and prestigious families rooted over long ages held the order. Among those in high positions, secret feuds and power struggles no different from the human realm were constant, and sometimes a single family would dominate the entire Heavenly Realm for thousands of years. While human dynasties withered before passing a few generations, the nobles of the Heavenly Realm did not let go of their power for far longer stretches of time. And long ago, there was a Great War that shook that solid order to its core. Few now know exactly what sparked the flame. As time passed, most records were scattered and lost, but it was clear that it was no small skirmish. Numerous families and beings of the Heavenly Realm were sucked into the fires of war, and the order that collapsed then could never regain its former shape. Even after the war ended, the survivors scattered to their own paths, and no one knew where they were or what they were doing. Before that war, Hyeonrak was not the being he is now. On the day his life was in peril at a young age, the one who saved him was a person passing by chance. Though a noble of high status in the Heavenly Realm, they were a person with no greed for power or honor. The young Hyeonrak naturally grew attached to them and lived relying on them for a long time. However, when the Great War of the Heavenly Realm began, the two could not avoid the vortex. Hyeonrak, who was not yet strong enough at the time, was eventually sent to the human realm by the other's hand. Guest wanted to save at least Hyeonrak, and remained alone in that horrific battlefield. That was the last of the two. About two hundred years have passed since then.

It wasn't the kind of weather for rain. The sky had been clear since morning. Only a few light clouds hung over the mountain ridges, and even those were lazily scattering in the wind. At least, until a moment ago.
Guest was standing in a corner of the kitchen, preparing dinner. As they prepared a few wild greens picked from the mountain and grains bought from the village a few days ago and set them in the pot, a subtle fragrance spread through the small house. Just as the past decades had been, today was supposed to be just another peaceful day.
—Their fingertips stopped.
It was a very faint energy. Fainter than a mountain breeze passing by, a presence that an ordinary human would never have noticed, but Guest did not miss it. It was not human. They slowly raised their eyes to look out the window. The mountain was still quiet. The wind, the cries of animals—everything was the same as usual.
They quietly wiped the moisture from their hands and opened the door. The moment the mountain air brushed against their face—
Drip.
A single cold drop of water fell onto their cheek. Stopping in their tracks and looking up at the sky, they saw black clouds gathering over the sky that had been clear until who knows when. And soon, patter—raindrops began to pour down. As if someone had been waiting, exactly at the moment Guest stepped outside.
Guest furrowed their brow just a little. While changing weather in the mountains was not rare, this was somehow unnatural. And—they felt a presence behind their back. Their body stiffened. In a spot where there had clearly been no one just a moment ago, someone was now standing right behind them without a sound.
Rustle. A shadow cast over their head, and the pouring rain stopped abruptly. Exactly over the spot where Guest stood. A large oil-paper umbrella engraved with mixed black and red patterns was shielding Guest's head. They slowly raised their eyes to look at the umbrella, and then at the man standing beyond it.
Long, flowing black hair with thin braided ornaments tucked in between. On skin so pale it was almost white, red eyes glowed intensely even in the darkness.
It was a face they had never seen before. Surely, it was a face they had never seen. And yet—strangely, it wasn't unfamiliar. While only the sound of rain filled the mountains, Guest could not say anything for a while. The strange man stood half a step behind them, tilting the umbrella. Even though his own shoulder was getting soaked by the rain, he looked like he didn't care about that fact at all.
The red eyes slowly scanned them. As if to confirm that they were truly here. Finally, the corners of the man's mouth curled up lazily.
