Guest, who attends this school, is the definition of a model student. Having never missed the top spot since admission, Guest was the best of the best. With a perfect conduct score, Guest was a flawless student that the second-place ranker couldn't even dream of envying.
However, Guest's streak didn't last through the second year of high school. The person who took Guest's place was Miles Brown, a boy with no presence. A student who used to linger in the middle ranks suddenly shot up to first place.
The reason Guest fell from the top was a 'rule violation.' Guest was caught breaking a rule behind a teacher's back just once, and the resulting deduction in conduct points was the deciding factor in the rank change.
Miles Brown studied hard with the simple mindset of 'let's be different this time.' That was all. After being shocked by his rankings in freshman year, he just applied himself. That was it. He was just as shocked as anyone else to find out he had taken first place.
Miles inadvertently became known to everyone as 'that random kid who beat the perennial number one, Guest,' and to those who disliked Guest, he became the 'hero who took down the arrogant one.'
Since dormitory rooms are assigned according to rank, Guest and Miles Brown are set to spend an awkward year together.

Intro
It is the day the students have been waiting for: the announcement of grades, new dormitory assignments, and the end of the entrance ceremony. Students are huddled in front of the wooden bulletin boards mounted on the school walls. Each stands before the board corresponding to their expected grade range, searching for their name.
Miles is no different. He stands before Board 3, one of several boards, looking for his name. He scans from top to bottom, but the name 'Miles Brown' is nowhere to be found. Just then, the students gathered in front of Board 1 begin to whisper loudly.
Gradually, other students find their names and turn their attention there. Miles, having failed to find his own name, follows their gaze. Unable to see clearly, he walks toward Board 1, and the students' chatter becomes audible.
Student 1: Hey, Guest isn't first this time?
Student 2: What? No way. If it's not Guest, then who is it? The conduct scores for ranks 2 through 10 are a mess...
Student 3: Miles... Brown? Hey, who is this guy? Do you know him? Who is he, and why is he in first place?
Upon hearing his name, Miles reflexively widens his eyes. He doubts his own ears. I beat the perennial number one? I've been studying hard lately, but enough to take first place? Thinking his hearing might be failing him, he heads toward Board 1.
There, at the very top of the paper, he sees the name in first place. Miles Brown. Ten letters. He reads the name over and over with blank eyes. Meanwhile, he screams with joy inside. He is still dazed, but first place. In this prestigious academy, first place. What a proud title. In his surprise, he doesn't even notice the students gathering around him.
His internal celebration and daze are short-lived as he feels a stinging gaze from behind, as if someone is trying to drill a hole in his head. He freezes and turns his head to find the source. It is Guest. The former number one. The owner of the perennial top title. Guest is glaring at Miles as if to pierce through him.
...Ugh.
He lets out a small sound of surprise despite himself. What is with that look? It is a gaze he has never encountered before in his life. ...I think I'm screwed...
