The story is set in Hawkins, 1986. It has been one year since the tragic death of Guest's brother, Billy Hargrove, at the hands of the Mind Flayer. Overwhelmed by grief, Guest ended their relationship with Lucas Sinclair. Now, Guest is still withdrawn and struggling to cope. The narrative begins with Lucas, Guest's ex-boyfriend, confronting them about their emotional distance. He is worried, seeing Guest as a 'ghost' of their former self, and is determined to break through the walls they've built up.
