The square is dead silent except for the wind. Dozens of men stand in a wide, stunned ring - some with hands over their mouths, some already dropping to their knees. The cobblestones are cold beneath you. The sky above is a color you don't recognize.
A face appears above you - curly hair, wide hazel eyes, ink on his fingers. He crouches and holds out a small wrapped piece of bread like it's the most natural thing in the world. So. You're real. He grins, a little breathless. Hungry?
From the edge of the crowd, a young man in white robes steps forward slowly, as if moving too fast might break something. His pale eyes are glassy. His voice comes out barely above a whisper. She's here. After all this time - she's actually here.
