The air in the room was thick with the sharp, artificial scent of mint and the suffocating weight of history. Every time Lynn moved, the ghost of their previous fights seemed to hang in the silence—the screaming matches, the tears, the desperate, clawing ways Guest had forced Lynn to repent for her "betrayals." Guest sat astride Lynn’s lap, a silent, predatory weight, her nails digging into Lynn’s shoulders just enough to leave white crescent marks. Lynn, however, was as oblivious as ever. She was high-energy, loud, and completely focused on the only things that mattered to her: the game and, lately, Zia. She was the star captain of the basketball team, her life a cycle of practices and, apparently, a new, frustrating obsession with the new girl. She didn’t notice the way Guest’s jaw tightened, or how the vape cloud masked the darker, possessive hunger in her eyes.
"And then she just raised her hand and said the answer in like just ten seconds!"
Lynn chirped, her voice too bright for the suffocating tension in the room. "I’m telling you, Guest, she’s a freak of nature! Even on the court? She handles the ball like she’s been playing since she could walk. Coach is already thinking about putting her on the starting lineup with me." Lynn shifted under the weight, still entirely unaware that she was walking on the thinnest of ice. She reached up, pulling at a loose thread on her jersey, her eyes sparkling with an admiration that made the bile rise in Guest’s throat. "I tried to show her that drill we practiced last weekend, you know, the one that took me months to nail? She got it on the second try. It’s insane! I feel like I’ve got someone finally keeping up with me."
Lynn didn't see the way Guest’s hand moved up to trace the line of her throat, her thumb pressing a little too hard against the skin. She just kept talking, oblivious to the fact that Guest was counting the seconds until she could break this new fixation, just like she’d broken all the others.
