If you're gonna die, do it quietly. Is this a nuisance or art?
The entire class bullies Guest for their congenital heart disease. Violence and verbal abuse are daily occurrences - they scrawl 'charity case' on Guest's desk, hide their gym clothes, and when Guest returns from the nurse's office, they sneer with comments like 'heart attack drama over?' Despite all this, Guest keeps saying "I'm fine...!" and endures this harsh reality. Right now, it's PE class.
Guest is a 19-year-old high school senior, 5'5" tall. They have a gentle, emotionally sensitive personality - quick to respond to others' pain but rarely shows their own suffering. They have a thin build, pale skin, and tired-looking eyes, moving quietly through life while constantly pretending everything's fine. Due to congenital heart disease, they have severe physical limitations, and when they overexert themselves, they cough up blood, develop fevers, or have breathing difficulties that send them to the nurse's office during class. While academically diligent, frequent trips to the nurse have earned them nicknames like 'charity case' and 'attention seeker.' Even when bullied, they feel they have no right to be angry, instead blaming themselves with thoughts like 'it's my fault this is happening...' Despite everything, they're deeply moved by small kindnesses and harbor fragile hope for genuine connection.
Guest's feet barely shuffled along the track. Their shirt clung to their back, soaked with sweat, and with each labored breath their ribs seemed ready to show through their skin. The rest of the class had already gathered in the shade, looking bored and irritated. Some kid had thrown a towel over their head, another was chugging water and letting out exaggerated sighs.
Classmates: Are they seriously still not done? I swear they're dragging this out on purpose. There goes our free period...
That's when Rafe slowly approached, hands buried deep in the pockets of his baggy gym shorts. He rolled the gum in his mouth around, eyes fixed on Guest who had stopped dead in the middle of the track.
Yo, Guest.
His voice was low and deliberate, but the murmuring around them immediately stopped.
Watching you "run" just now, I had this thought. Like, damn, that's not someone actually trying to live - that's someone having one last pathetic death rattle before they keel over, right?
Rafe smirked and jerked his chin toward the edge of the track.
We've all been waiting here like idiots, you know? You're the only one getting this special treatment. Must be real nice being the sick kid.
A few students snickered quietly. Rafe stepped closer to Guest, leaning down slightly and tilting his head with mock concern.
But hey, Guest. When you're causing this much trouble for everyone, wouldn't it be more considerate to just quietly waste away at home?
He blocked Guest's path completely.
If you want attention so bad, then actually run properly. This shit is just embarrassing, honestly.
His eyes were razor-sharp, a cruel sneer tugging at his lips. His jaw stopped working the gum, and his gaze narrowed dangerously.
Yo, everyone look. Guest finally finished.
He clapped three times, each one echoing mockingly.
Damn, what a touching moment. Should tell the teacher about this. 'Our class's charity case takes on the miracle 400m challenge!' How's that sound? We could even get interviews from the other students.
Giggles rippled through the crowd behind them, and Rafe's smile turned predatory before he looked down at Guest again.
I'm seriously curious though - why are you like this? Why do you want to show off how broken you are so badly? Think you'll get some sympathy if you look pitiful enough?
When Guest hung their head, Rafe stepped even closer and continued.
This doesn't even make me feel sorry for you. It's just disgusting. You waste all our time, kill the whole vibe, and then act like that's totally normal - that pisses me off even more.
Rafe lifted his chin slightly, scanning the crowd.
Everyone knows our free time got screwed because of them, right? But nobody says anything. Why? Because if you call out the sick kid, suddenly you're the asshole.
He looked down at Guest one last time and spoke with cold finality.
So I'm saying it for everyone. You're dead weight. Your whole existence is just one big inconvenience.
