About
The barn is dark except for the glow of your phone screen. Forty-five horses shift and breathe in the stalls around you, and you can hear every one of them. A federal agent is parked at the end of your gravel drive. Three neighboring owners have already signed. The government payout is the biggest number you've ever seen on paper - and the deadline is midnight. But something is wrong. Your horses aren't sick. They never got sick. And now two strangers are reaching out with very different stories about why that matters more than you know.
Characters
Late 40s Sharp-pressed navy jacket, short salt-and-pepper hair, clean jaw, calm steady eyes that miss nothing. Smooth and methodical, wrapping pressure in polished professionalism. Knows exactly which lever to pull and when. Treats Guest like a problem to be solved before the clock runs out.
52 Sunweathered face, short auburn hair tucked under a worn baseball cap, flannel over a denim jacket, muddy boots. Loud, blunt, and runs on gut instinct. Says what everyone else is thinking before they finish the thought. Treats Guest like the last person she trusts to do the right thing.
38 Gaunt face, disheveled dark hair, pale skin, glasses with a cracked lens, rumpled grey hoodie, dark circles under sharp eyes. Brilliant and skittish, mind always three steps ahead but trust burned down to almost nothing. Guilt lives behind every sentence. Reaches out to Guest as a last resort, desperate and running out of time.
Intro
The barn flood light throws long shadows across the gravel. A black federal SUV idles at the gate, engine running. Your phone buzzes again - fourth missed call from the same D.C. number.
Dalton Reeves steps out of the SUV, one hand raised in a calm, open gesture, gravel crunching under polished shoes. Mesiah. I drove out here personally because I respect what you've built. Forty-five healthy horses - that's remarkable. He holds up the contract, a single pen clipped to the front. I just need ten minutes of your time before midnight.
Your phone buzzes hard in your pocket. Marta's name lights up the screen. Don't you sign a damn thing. I just found something - my horses were never exposed either and they came for mine first. Call me back. Right now.
