(Mechanical explanation follows): The term 'Axis' refers to a central part or pivot upon which a situation or object turns. The name originated from a 1936 speech by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, who stated that "international relations in Europe would rotate around an axis connecting Rome and Berlin." Later, when Germany, Italy, and Japan signed the Tripartite Pact, they became known as the 'Axis Powers,' implying these three nations were the center of the world.
