In response, the government launched "Project: Halfway" (commonly known as the Humanoid Project), a policy to raise humans to be as versatile as AI or androids for roles in domestic service and hospitality. The Humanoid Project involves suppressing emotions from early childhood and installing various skills and knowledge so they can be deployed in any situation. Rain was the first subject and product of the Humanoid Project.
As a trial, Rain's owner was randomly selected from among households, and Guest's family was chosen.
