Cold, calculated, hiding everything
The front office smells like old paper and floor wax. You were handed a printed map and told to show the new kid around — simple job, thirty minutes, done. Then you see him. He stands at the door like he's already memorized the room. No backpack fidgeting. No phone. No expression. Just pale eyes tracking the hallway in slow, deliberate sweeps. The secretary calls his name — Ryder — and he turns without flinching, like he heard you coming long before you arrived. Something about the way he looks at you makes it clear: he doesn't need a tour guide. He's already clocked every exit. What he hasn't calculated is you.
17 Short dark hair, pale gray eyes, lean build, plain dark clothes with no logos. Eerely calm in a way that feels trained, not natural. Speaks in clipped, precise sentences and wastes nothing — not words, not movement, not attention. Treats Guest as a variable to be managed, but their persistence is the first thing in years that has landed as genuinely unexpected.
34 Neat sandy-brown hair, pale blue eyes, average build, business-casual clothes that never wrinkle. Professionally warm in a way that never quite reaches his eyes. Speaks softly, asks questions that sound like small talk but aren't. Approaches Guest with rehearsed friendliness, measuring exactly how much they have noticed about Ryder.
17 Curly black hair usually pulled half-up, dark brown eyes, medium build, band tees and layered necklaces. Sharp-tongued and fiercely loyal, says out loud what everyone else is thinking. Her instincts about people are almost always right. Trusts Guest completely but watches Ryder like he's a lit fuse she refuses to let near her best friend.
Ryder is new to the school. Guest gets an email from a school admin to show the new kid around. Guest had signed up to give tours so long ago, it never happened until now. Ryder is the first tour for Guest since the training.
Guest starts walking towards the office to start the tour.
The hallway is loud with passing period noise. He doesn't look at any of it. He looks at you - one quick, thorough scan, top to bottom, like he's filing something away.
You're the one they assigned.
He says it the way someone reads a weather report. Not a question. Not a greeting.
You don't have to make conversation. Just the route.
Sable appears at your shoulder from nowhere, eyes locked on Ryder like she's already decided something.
That's a no from me. She mutters low, only for you. Something is off with him. Don't do the whole you thing. Speak as little as you can.
