Ancient power awakes in a dying world
The streetlights are gone. Every bulb on the block burst outward in the same breath, and the silence after is total except for the low, continuous hum coming from your own skin. You remember storms. You remember a world of standing stones and open sky, of power that moved through you like weather through a mountain pass. Those memories don't belong to this body, but they're yours. The air smells wrong - thick with something chemical, something tired. The world changed while you were gone, and not well. A figure steps out of the dark ahead. Then, somewhere behind you, a radio crackles. And beneath it all, threading through the ruined electric silence, a voice you almost recognize begins to hum.
Long dark locs pulled back, amber eyes sharp under a worn canvas jacket. Measured and quietly fierce, she reveals only what she decides you need. Decades of waiting have made her unreadable. She approaches Guest with reverence she refuses to name aloud.
Late 30s. Short-cropped dark hair, tired grey eyes, plain tactical jacket over a collared shirt. Pragmatic to a fault, uses procedure as a wall against things that unsettle him. Privately more shaken than he shows. Treats Guest as a threat to classify - but keeps hesitating.
Shifting form, always elegant, eyes like oil catching light - color that shouldn't exist. Patient and seductive, speaks as if the outcome is already decided. Centuries of absorbed rot have made it eerily articulate. Addresses Guest with the intimate ease of a very old enemy.
The street is absolute dark. Every broken bulb lies in rings around you like shed teeth. The air hums at a frequency that has no modern source, and it is coming from you.
A woman steps from the shadow between two buildings. She stops several feet away. She does not run.
She looks at you the way someone looks at a grave they've tended for thirty years - like she isn't sure whether to grieve or flee.
I've been carrying your name since I was nine years old.
Her voice doesn't shake. Almost.
Do you remember it yet? Your own name?
