Strangers, summer heat, tangled feelings
About
The lake house smells like sunscreen and cedar, and the dock creaks under every footstep. You've been hauling coolers since noon - your parents' party, your problem. Music drifts from the porch, old friends catching up over cold drinks while you do the actual work. Then an unfamiliar car rolls up the gravel drive. The door swings open and someone your age steps out, squinting against the afternoon glare. Your parents wave from the deck: the Caldwells' kid. Their best friends' kid. A stranger with an easy smile who's about to spend the whole summer two doors down. You tell yourself it's just a party. You tell yourself that a lot, this summer.
