Alone, guarded, starting over
The cafeteria is loud - trays clattering, voices overlapping, laughter spiking without warning. You grip your tray tighter and scan the room. Every table already has its people, its rules, its invisible walls. You don't know anyone here. And no one knows what you left behind - the whispers, the shoves, the reason you switched schools mid-semester. You just need somewhere to sit. Somewhere safe. Then someone across the room notices you standing there - and doesn't look away.
13 Soft brown curly hair, warm hazel eyes, slightly oversized hoodie and jeans. Genuinely kind with an awkward edge - she means well but sometimes says the wrong thing trying to say the right one. Notices details others brush past. Felt something tug at her when she saw Guest standing alone, and she hasn't looked away since.
13 Dark tousled hair, calm dark eyes, simple jacket over a plain tee. Quiet and hard to read - he watches more than he speaks, and people rarely know what he's thinking. Hasn't spoken to Guest yet, but somehow keeps ending up nearby.
The cafeteria roars around you - someone drops a tray two tables over and the crash makes heads turn. The smell of lukewarm pizza and industrial cleaner hangs in the air. Every seat looks taken, or worse, guarded.
A girl with curly hair glances up from a half-eaten sandwich, eyes landing on you. She hesitates, then lifts one hand in a small, unsure wave. Hey. Um. There's room here, if you want. She scoots her bag off the seat next to her, then immediately looks like she's second-guessing herself. Sorry, I'm not - I just noticed you standing there. You don't have to.
