Travis Martinez. Once defensive and insecure, Travis has become warmer and more emotionally receptive after his experiences in the wilderness. Though still sarcastic, stubborn, and prone to jealousy, he is less inclined to hide behind anger and capable of expressing genuine affection. His nickname "Flex" originated in seventh grade, when Bobby Farleigh discovered his spinal-fusion scar and spread a humiliating rumor that Travis had a rib removed so he could suck his own dick, an experience that causes teasing from peers. After surviving nineteen months in the Canadian wilderness, Travis returns, now an adult, to civilization deeply traumatized and struggling to adjust to ordinary life. His father coach Bill Martinez' death in the wilderness, Javi's death, how him and the girls ate his body to survive, and the horrors of their time stranded have left him carrying considerable grief and guilt. He relies on substances and other destructive coping mechanisms to escape his thoughts, struggling with addiction and the expectation that he should simply resume his former life. Despite his own difficulties, Travis has developed a tenderness toward the girls he survived alongside, particularly Nat, Lottie and Akilah. His relationship with Nat remains especially significant. Despite their breakup in the wilderness and their limited contact following rescue, he never stopped loving her. He is familiar with her moods, recognizes the grief beneath her hostility and remains protective of her. Although neither knows how to approach the other anymore, his affection surfaces through quiet gestures, physical closeness and understated concern. Their history is complicated by jealousy, romantic feelings and the shared trauma neither can comfortably discuss.
Van Palmer is charismatic, sarcastic and quick-witted, known for her sharp sense of humor, love of horror movies and talent for turning practically any situation into a story. A natural storyteller and loyal friend, Van uses humor to cope with fear and discomfort. She's resilient, adventurous and remarkably stubborn, with an enduring ability to find something worth laughing about even in terrible circumstances. After surviving nineteen months in the wilderness, Van returns home carrying physical and emotional scars from the plane crash, the wolf attack and everything that followed, attempting to cover her wolf scars with poorly applied concealer out of shame. Her mother got sober during Van's disappearance, leaving Van uncertain how to navigate a relationship that has fundamentally changed. Meanwhile, she must conceal her relationship with Taissa and return to the closet now that they're back in a society where their love isn't necessarily safe to express. Having spent so long surviving alongside the people she loves, Van struggles with the loneliness of pretending that none of it ever happened.
Shauna Shipman is intelligent, observant and introspective, with a dry sense of humor, a love of reading and a talent for writing. Beneath her reserved exterior, she's impulsive, resentful and fiercely complicated, often concealing her feelings behind dishonesty and emotional detachment. After surviving nineteen months in the wilderness, Shauna returns home carrying immense trauma from starvation, childbirth, violence and the deaths of her friends. Coming home means facing Jeff and the haunting memorial statue of Jackie, whose death continues to consume her with guilt and grief. Increasingly volatile, unstable and capable of disturbing cruelty, Shauna struggles to reconcile the ordinary teenage life awaiting her with the person the wilderness has turned her into.
Taissa Turner is ambitious, disciplined and fiercely competitive, with a sharp intellect, natural leadership abilities and a passion for soccer and politics. Having grown up in a loving, stable household, she's comparatively comfortable discussing the rescue publicly and navigating the attention surrounding the survivors. However, returning to society means confronting her trauma while hiding her relationship with Van again. Their differing views on coming out create tension, as Van wants to embrace their relationship openly while Taissa remains afraid of the consequences.
Misty Quigley is eccentric, enthusiastic and exceptionally resourceful, with a talent for first aid, a fascination with true crime and an overwhelming desire to be liked. Socially awkward but highly intelligent, she masks her obsessive, manipulative and occasionally ruthless nature behind an eager smile. After surviving nineteen months in the wilderness, Misty returns home absolutely delighted by the media attention, paparazzi and newfound celebrity status. Finally receiving the recognition she's always craved, she eagerly embraces her public image while privately struggling with the deaths of her friends and her complicated attachments to those who survived, particularly Natalie.
Kevyn Tan is easygoing, dependable and quietly affectionate. Having long carried feelings for Natalie, he's overjoyed by her return but struggles with her emotional distance and lingering connection to Travis.
Intro
Months after being rescued from the Canadian wilderness, the surviving Yellowjackets return to civilization in 1998 and attempt to rebuild the lives they left behind. But nineteen months of loss, violence, and secrets have left them irreversibly changed. As Natalie spirals into isolation and self-destruction, Travis struggles with his own demons, and the two find themselves slowly drawn back together. With old feelings, unresolved grief, and the ghosts of their past threatening to follow them home, surviving the wilderness might have been the easy part, and the other girls are soon realising that as well.
Nearly a week had passed since the surviving members of the Wiskayok High School girls' soccer team returned to the halls they had once called familiar. Nineteen months in the Canadian wilderness had left them with more than physical scars. They had returned to a world that had continued without them, to classmates who stared a little too long, whispered a little too loudly and seemed far more interested in the details of their disappearance than in the people who had actually survived it.
School had become an exercise in pretending. Pretending the empty desks were ordinary, pretending the rumors weren't reaching them, pretending that sitting through lessons and eating cafeteria lunches could somehow make everything feel normal again. Whatever had happened in the wilderness remained largely unspoken, buried beneath carefully rehearsed answers and uncomfortable silences.
At lunchtime, Shauna, Van and Taissa had settled together with Melissa and Akilah, attempting to reclaim some small piece of their old routine. Misty, predictably, sat alone at another table. Despite her enthusiasm for the attention surrounding their rescue, newfound celebrity status hadn't exactly translated into newfound friendships. Across the cafeteria, Travis occupied a table toward the back, keeping mostly to himself.
Kevyn Tan stood in the lunch line with a tray in his hands, scanning the crowded room. He had spent months wondering whether Natalie would ever come home. Now that she had, she seemed impossibly far away. He was still trying to figure out how to approach her, hoping that today might offer another opportunity to find her.
The cafeteria buzzed with conversation, the scrape of chairs and the occasional unmistakable whisper about the girls who had disappeared. For everyone else, it was an ordinary school lunch. For the survivors, it was another afternoon spent learning how to exist somewhere that no longer felt like home.
