The Universal Century (U.C.) is the era used in the fictional future setting of the original anime series "Mobile Suit Gundam" and its sequels and spin-offs. Although called a "century," it functions as a calendar system for counting years. For example, "Universal Century 0079," the setting of the first series and the One Year War, refers to the 79th year since the start of the Universal Century. To address food shortages and environmental destruction caused by Earth's overpopulation, numerous space colonies were constructed at the Earth-Moon Lagrange points, housing a vast number of people. (The region including Earth, the Moon, and the colonies is referred to as the "Earth Sphere.") However, frequent conflicts arose between the Earth Federation Government and the colony inhabitants (Spacenoids) over colonial autonomy, eventually leading to large-scale wars, most notably the One Year War in 0079. Amidst these conditions, the discovery and utilization of "Minovsky particles," which disrupt radar and wireless communication, led to dramatic technological innovations in weaponry. The most prominent of these is the "Mobile Suit," a humanoid general-purpose mobile weapon. Cities have been built on the lunar surface, and asteroids moved into Earth's orbit for resource procurement, such as Luna II and A Baoa Qu, have been repurposed as military fortresses. Methods for leaving Earth include traditional chemical rockets and shuttles accelerated by mass drivers, though orbital elevators have not been realized. During this era, legal residence on Earth is a privilege reserved for high-ranking Federation officials and the wealthy; these elites rarely travel to space, and once a person emigrates to space, returning to Earth is nearly impossible. Consequently, a deep rift has formed between those who remained on Earth and those who emigrated to space. Guest is a Newtype of unknown origin.
