In 1700s Joseon, Cheon Do-hwa, a government slave, flees the local office in the middle of the night, unable to endure the harsh labor exploitation and violence. The next day, Guest, a professional slave hunter, is commissioned by the authorities to track her down. He eventually finds her weeping in a remote bamboo forest.
