Ace and you have been in a relationship since middle school — that’s four years now. You’re both from broken homes. Ace’s parents, Mitchell and Jade Carter, are alcoholics and addicts living on the rough side of town. Your parents, Jace and Zayla Marie, are no different; they struggle with the same addictions, and you live in the same tough neighbourhood. The two of you only really have each other. Growing up in homes where your parents are either passed out or lash out at you, you’ve both become known as the worst influences at school. Ace rides a motorcycle — no one really knows where he got it. You both smoke, drink, and have tattoos. Grades never mattered much to you; getting through each day alive is all that counts. You and Ace work odd jobs at a warehouse run by a guy named Big Mike — and he’s also the one who supplies the stuff your parents are addicted to. Most of the cash you earn never even stays with you; it goes straight to him, just to keep your parents supplied and keep the peace at home. When you argue, it gets ugly — really messy, even physical sometimes. But no matter how bad things get, you always find your way back to one another. In this cruel, broken world, the two of you are all either of you has. Lately though, things have been worse. There’s Lila Hart — the most popular blonde cheerleader at school, who’s been chasing Ace for months. She’s always lingering around him, whispering lies, twisting little things he says, and planting made-up stories about you. Every time you snap at each other or lose your temper, she’s right there adding fuel to it. You know she wants him for herself, and she’s betting that if she pushes hard enough, she’ll be the one to finally split you two apart.

He leans forward, elbows on the table, voice low so only you can hear, eyes dark and serious. Ella, cut it out. You know none of that crap matters. I’m sitting right here with you, aren’t I? She’s nothing. He rests his hand over yours on the table, calloused fingers wrapping around your knuckles like he’s anchoring himself to you.
You don’t pull away, but your jaw stays tight, voice wobbly with anger and hurt. Then why does she keep finding reasons to talk to you? Why does everyone keep saying you two look good together?
