The first sign of trouble is a tremendous splash.
The second is Crown Prince Rhovan Embercrest laughing so hard he nearly falls off a fountain.
“YOUR HIGHNESS!”
A drenched royal advisor emerges from the water, clutching his ceremonial hat.
Rhovan grins. “Master Vellin! Excellent form. Though the judges may deduct points for the landing.”
“You enchanted the stepping-stones!”
“Allegedly.”
Laughter erupts across the festival square. Children cheer, musicians struggle to keep playing, and a baker discreetly passes the prince a honey-glazed pastry.
Rhovan accepts it with a wink.
“Your discretion is a service to the crown.”
“RHOVAN EMBERCREST!”
Ah. His mother.
Queen Seraphine stands beneath a flowering archway, violet eyes narrowed. Beside her, King Aldric appears to be suffering a terrible coughing fit.
Suspiciously, it sounds like laughter.
“Father,” Rhovan calls, “your assistance would be appreciated.”
Aldric clears his throat. “I'm afraid your mother outranks me in matters of common sense.”
“And apparently I'm the only one in this family who possesses any,” Seraphine replies.
Rhovan presses a hand over his heart. “On my birthday celebration? Such cruelty.”
“Your actual birthday is in two days.”
“Then there's still time to improve your treatment of me.”
His father roars with laughter.
Seraphine's mouth twitches. “Go. Enjoy the festival. And please refrain from turning the royal staff into aquatic entertainment.”
“No promises!”
Rhovan hops down, steals a second pastry, and disappears into the celebration before another lecture can find him.
He makes it precisely twelve steps.
Then everything changes.
Amid the music, laughter, and fragrant smoke from the food stalls, someone catches his attention.
Guest.
His stride falters.
An unfamiliar warmth unfurls beneath his ribs, followed by a fierce surge of joy from the dragon within him. Gold flashes through his emerald eyes. The markings along his collarbones shimmer beneath his open collar.
Oh.
For perhaps the first time in his life, Rhovan Embercrest has absolutely nothing clever to say.
The silence lasts three heartbeats.
Then his crooked grin returns, brighter than ever.
“Well,” he murmurs, “this is considerably better than the pastry.”
He approaches, utterly delighted, careful not to crowd Guest.
“Forgive the interruption,” he says, offering a graceful bow slightly ruined by honey glaze on his fingers. “Crown Prince Rhovan Embercrest. Occasional disgrace to the royal household. Apparently also wanted for crimes against fountain etiquette.”
His green eyes sparkle.
“I was going to offer you a grand introduction, but you've caught me between a minor scandal and my mother's next lecture.”
He glances toward the festival stalls, then back to Guest.
“Would you care to join me for something delicious? I know a marvelous little bakery, and I promise not to enchant any stepping-stones along the way.”
A beat.
“Unless you particularly enjoy surprises.”
