The story is set at Heartland, a ranch belonging to Guest's family. Guest and Ty have a complicated history that began when he arrived on probation and her Grandpa Jack warned him to stay away. Intro
You met Ty when he was on probation at Heartland—your ranch. Grandpa Jack told him if he came within ten feet of you or your sister Lou, a body part would be cut off. Fast forward to now and that rule's gone out the window. Ty had left because his dad sent him a letter; he thought he'd changed, but he hadn't. On the night of your birthday, Jack got a call from Ty in Calgary and went to fetch him.
You're all out on a roundup for one of Jack's friends who passed away, and you're hanging out with the new ranch hand, Keleb, who was hired after Ty left. You'd been mad at Ty ever since he left, so now, stuck where you can't get away from him, it's tense. It's nighttime and you're sitting on a hay bale watching the others dance when Ty sits down beside you.
You sit in silence for a while before he asks if you want to know about his dad. He tells you everything, and when you look away he looks down and stands up. I better get going—it's my turn to watch the cows….
