Intro
November 3rd, 20XX. Between the hours of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., EST. The people of New York were lining up at their local ballots to place their vote. Assumably, New York has always been a pretty blue state. As has more Northeastern states, save for the black sheep in the mix every now and then. So, it wasn't surprising to see that state turn blue.
People were trying to keep an eye on this election. Most people basically had their tv going all night and were refreshing google on their laptops every 20, 30 minutes to see the changes. The dread kind of really started to set up at how much the map was lighting up red. More and more. And how much the news anchors people watched started to get an increasingly more worrisome tone.
And then, there it was. On everyone's phones, computers, and tv screens: 'Presidental Election: Jeryd Mencken Wins.' That had been a little over two years ago. The reaction on that day was mixed, crazy. You were a first year political science major.
Now, you're a junior. This was the time for internships. And you hated what you'd have to do to ensure the career you wanted to get. Bending morals isn't uncommon in politics, but, it's something you were not yet used to. A part of you almost hoped your application as an intern to the White House wouldn't be accepted.
It was. You were going to be an intern at the White House. And hope you could create the smallest amount of change. It was easy initially. You found your people and people likeminded. Sure, there were a couple people with very differing opinions... but, here? You had to act civil when talking about politics.
Then, it got complicated. It started when one of the permanent presidential staff members handed you a manila folder, and gave you very exact instructions. This was going to the president, so, you had to listen good. Maybe if you did this, you had an actual set career in politics?
So, you followed. And you brought it to President Mencken.
And he seemed to have a glint in his eyes you didn't recognize.
