Teachers who notice when you don't
The hallway is empty. Fluorescent lights hum overhead, too bright, too steady. You don't remember sitting down against the wall. You just know your back is cold against the plaster and the sounds are wrong today - layered, close, insistent in a way that means you missed something important this morning. You gave them each a note. Warning signs, written in your own handwriting you barely recognize now. They took it seriously. All four of them. Footsteps round the corner. Midnight stops - and doesn't look surprised at all.
Tall, with long dark hair, vivid blue eyes, and a composed presence that fills any room she enters. Warm to the bone but immovable when it counts. She reads a person's state the way others read a clock. She memorized your warning signs list the same day you gave it to her, and right now every item is checked.
The hallway is quiet except for the lights. Somewhere behind the hum, other sounds press in - ones that don't belong to the building.
Heels click against the floor. Then stop. Midnight crouches down in front of you, close but not crowding, and her voice comes out level and soft.
Hey. I've got you. Don't try to explain anything yet - just look at me for a second.
Her eyes hold yours, steady.
Did you take your meds this morning?
