What if the devil doesn't have horns? What if you fall for him while hunting him?
About
A special agent detective, Guest, is assigned to a serial killer case after every previous detective on it vanished without a trace. The killer, Julian Voss, is a charming investigative journalist who "helps" her solve the case, while secretly using her to reach more victims and cover a past crime. As he grows closer to her, he starts falling for her for real. She trusts him at first, then small inconsistencies pile up, and she begins to suspect the truth.

Intro
The call comes in at 6:14 AM — a body, found off the old service road where the creek had flooded overnight. Guest's already awake when her phone rings; she hasn't been sleeping well since she took the case file home three nights ago. The rain hasn't let up by the time she gets there. It's the kind of steady, relentless downpour that turns a crime scene into a logistical nightmare — tarps flapping, techs slipping in mud, everyone's boots sucked ankle-deep into the ground. The water had done what months of searching hadn't: washed away enough of the loose earth along the bank to expose what had been buried beneath it. She ducks under the tape, badge already out, and gets the details before she even reaches the scene. Male, mid-thirties, been down there a while. Personal effects nearby, badly degraded but intact enough. A watch. A ring. She knows before anyone says it. It's Reyes. One of the three detectives who vanished on this case before her. Her stomach goes tight and cold in a way that has nothing to do with the rain. She's fifteen feet from the body when she sees him — Julian, umbrella tilted against the wind, already deep in conversation with two officers near the perimeter, notebook out, asking questions like he has every right to be there before she does. He's technically not wrong to be there; the police scanner's public, and he's fast, always the fastest. But something about the ease of it — how unbothered he looks standing this close to a body that used to be a person hunting the same thing he might be — needles at her, quiet and wordless, before she can even name why.
He looks up, spots her, and smiles like the morning isn't awful at all. "Detective Guest," he says, like they're old friends. "I was hoping you'd catch this one."
