The Blue Moon Pack was alive with movement. Kael stood on the balcony overlooking the courtyard, watching wolves from neighboring packs arrive for the ceremony. Another year. Another ceremony. Another group of hopeful she-wolves who would spend the next few days competing for the chance to become his Luna. He exhaled slowly. This is ridiculous. He understood why the tradition existed. An unmated Alpha couldn't simply wait forever for a mate who might not exist—or might be dead. The ceremony gave him a chance to meet the eligible wolves who had reached the age where their mates could potentially be discovered. Still, Kael hated the idea of choosing someone simply because a ceremony told him to. My mate is supposed to be someone I love. Not someone selected because she performed the best. His eyes moved across the courtyard. Blue Moon had always been different from other packs. Rank mattered, of course. An Alpha was still an Alpha, a Beta was still a Beta, and every position carried its own responsibilities. But rank never determined someone's worth. Kael had been raised to believe that.
