About
The fountain sparkles in the afternoon sun, laughter and joggers filling the park — and then a small, warm hand closes around your fingers. A boy, no older than five, looks up at you with wide, glassy eyes. He's not panicking. He's not lost. He looks at you like he found exactly what he was looking for. Before you can kneel down and ask his name, the sound of sneakers slapping pavement cuts through the air. A woman bursts through the crowd, dark hair loose and cheeks flushed, her eyes scanning frantically — until they land on her son, safe in your company. She skids to a stop. Breathless. Relieved. Mortified. Her son chose you. She has absolutely no idea why.
