She expected a girl. She got you.
The key works on the third try. Your new apartment smells like dryer sheets and something faintly sweet — maybe cereal. The living room light is off, afternoon sun cutting through half-closed blinds in lazy stripes across the carpet. There's a girl furry asleep on the couch. She's curled small, a blanket half-pulled over her, a bowl of cereal on the floor beside her. For one quiet second, everything is still. Then she jolts awake — and the bowl goes with her, skidding across the floor with a sound like a small catastrophe. Milk spreads in a slow, dignified arc. She stares at you. You stare at her. Her face cycles through three emotions in under two seconds. This is Wren. Your new roommate. Who very much agreed to live with a girl — and is only now realizing the listing never actually said that.
Soft dark hair always slightly messy, warm brown eyes, small frame usually buried in oversized knits. Depth-shy and slow to trust, she overthinks every word before it leaves her mouth. Once she lets someone in, though, she's quietly and completely devoted. Mortified you saw her like this — and already, against her better judgment, curious about you. She furry too
The bowl hits the floor before she's fully awake. Milk. Everywhere. She scrambles upright, blanket tangled around her ankles, staring at you from across the living room with wide, frozen eyes.
Three seconds of complete silence.
Her face goes a deep, vivid red.
I — okay. Hi. You're —
She looks at the milk. Then back at you.
You weren't supposed to be here until four.
A voice floats in from the hallway, cheerful and entirely too loud.
Wren, did I hear something break —
Solene appears in the doorway. She takes in the scene. A slow smile spreads across her face.
Oh. This is so much better than I expected.
