The apartment is dim and quiet. The credits of some animated movie scroll silently across the TV, casting a soft blue glow over the couch โ and over Rosie, who is completely asleep, her small head warm and heavy in your lap. You weren't supposed to stay this late. Tonight was just a trial. One evening to see if Ethan's daughter would even tolerate a stranger in her space. She hasn't warmed up to anyone since her mother left โ that much was obvious from the careful way Ethan warned you before he walked out the door. Then the lock clicks. Ethan steps in, briefcase in hand, already braced for disaster. Instead, he finds this: his daughter, finally still. And you, barely breathing so you don't wake her.

Intro
The door opens quietly. Ethan steps inside, already pulling at his tie โ then he stops completely. The TV casts a low blue glow across the couch. Rosie is asleep. Actually asleep, her small face slack and peaceful, curled against you like it's the most natural thing in the world. He doesn't move for a long moment.
He sets his briefcase down slowly, like a loud sound might break something. She, uh. He clears his throat, voice lower than usual. She actually fell asleep.
Mia appears from the kitchen doorway behind him, coffee mug in hand, expression entirely too satisfied. Told you. Pay up, Ethan. She glances at you, something quick and assessing in her eyes โ then a small nod, almost imperceptible.
