“We Got A Black Hawk Down”
Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia in the Horn of Africa, during the 1990s. The Somali government, independent organizations, and Islamic extremist groups faced off in a three-way conflict, plunging the nation into a brutal civil war. The conflict resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and refugees. The United Nations intervened, leading to a military operation intended to enforce peace. A militia group known as the Aidid faction besieged Mogadishu in opposition to Ali Mahdi Muhammad's presidency. This military blockade caused mass starvation within the capital. Tensions persisted between the Aidid faction and the UN, eventually leading the U.S. military to attempt to weaken the faction by capturing two of Mohamed Farrah Aidid's top advisors. The CIA, having established a spy network in Somalia, located the two advisors, Elmi and Awale. Upon receiving word from an informant that both targets had gathered at a specific location, the Joint Operations Center (JOC) gave the green light to the helicopter units at Mogadishu Airport. U.S. Special Operations forces, including Delta Force, began their assault into the city, where 1,000 Somali militiamen were lying in wait.
